About Amanda
I am a lawyer, problem-solver and explorer of both places and solutions.
Since my first law job in 2007 as a clerk for Colorado S. Ct. Justice Nancy Rice, I have loved making sense of thorny legal issues and explaining it in writing.
I was born and raised in beautiful Colorado. I was educated at Amherst College and UC Law San Francisco, and I have worked as a litigator for Sidley Austin in SF and Clayton Utz in Sydney, Australia. Since 2015, I have proudly served my community in Ames, Iowa.

I help Iowa lawyers do more.
About Me
I am a lawyer, problem-solver and explorer. You have never met a lawyer with my career trajectory. I am not only of Iowa but also of Colorado, Massachusetts, the San Francisco bay area and Sydney, Australia.
Colorado
I am of the mountains.
I was born and raised in the beautiful mountain town of Glenwood Springs. I learned that if you misjudge your ability to jump across a creek, the hike back down in wet socks and shoes will feel long. Until I left for college, I never moved once. My family, friends and heart are in Colorado.
Amherst, MA
Amherst provided everything I’d dreamed of.
In 2003, I graduated magna cum laude with a degree in English literature from Amherst College. I cherish Amherst for affording an incredible, enriching education and lifetime friends – includng my husband.project 2

Paralegal work at the DOJ was a reality check.
After graduating, I worked for the DOJ Antitrust Division as an honors paralegal. A month-long trial in San Francisco required near constant all-nighters (it seemed).Bay Area Part 1
San Francisco
UC Law SF grounded me in the law.
Bay Area Part 2
San Francisco
Sidley Austin introduced me to the practice of law.
I worked for the global firm Sidley Austin both before (as a summer associate) and after graduating. After my year clerking in Denver, I worked as a litigation associate.
Sydney
I belonged to Sydney the day we arrived.
When my husband (now a professor of political science at ISU) landed a five-year postdoc at a university in Sydney, we went. After moving in, I volunteered with anti-discrimination legal center and enrolled in law school courses. (Imagine returning to law school!) Somehow I got through and even received awards. In 2011, I was admitted as a solicitor in New South Wales and began work in the litigation department of Clayton Utz, one of the “Big 6” Australian firms. My daughter was born in Sydney, and I am humbled and grateful that the three of us were welcomed as Australian citizens.Sydney

Amanda grew up in the beautiful small mountain of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. For her first 18 years, she never needed a single moving box.
The next 18 years involved a lot more movers:
- Amanda attended Amherst College in Massachusetts
- Worked for the USDOJ Antitrust Division in Washington, DC
- Attended law school at UC Law San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings)
- Clerked for the amazing Colorado Supreme Court Justice Nancy Rice (now retired) in Denver
- Worked as a summer associate and litigation associate for the huge global firm Sidley Austin in San Francisco
- Moved to Australia, became a lawyer qualified in New South Wales, and worked as a solicitor for Clayton Utz, a global law firm in Sydney
Amanda and her family moved to Ames Iowa in 2015. She has proudly served her community here since. No more moving boxes!
Amanda went to college in Massachusetts at Amherst College. She graduated magna cum laude with a degree in English lit from Amherst College in 2003.
The following year she worked as an honors paralegal at the USDOJ Antitrust Division in Washington DC, culminating in a month-long trial requiring frequent all-nighters for trial prep.
As it happened, San Francisco is where Amanda was enrolled to begin law school. She attended UC Law San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings). At UC Law SF, she was selected as a member of the Thurston Honor Society and served as a member and notes editor at the prestigious prestigious UC Law Journal (formerly Hastings Law Journal). She graduated with honors in 2007.
Amanda has the incredible pleasure and privilege of clerking for Colorado Supreme Court Justice Rice, who later served as Chief Justice before retiring. Amanda found the work researching and writing legal memos and opinions enlivening. It was a game changer.
She returned to San Francisco and worked as a litigation associate at Sidley Austin, where she had been a summer associate. In 2010, Amanda left Sidley Austin, traveled, and moved to Sydney, Australia.

Curiositiy drives better outcomes
Exploration requires openness to the unexpected. To explore, you must consider new possibilities and be curious about what you might be missing.
As a lawyer, my primary job is to listen to my clients. An average attorney will ask questions and take down the answers. An excellent attorney will listen to the answers with curiousity and consider unexpected solutions.
